Hollywood To Film Story of Desmond Doss
Some local readers may have seen a notice in the News and Advance about a movie, "Hacksaw Ridge", that is being filmed about the life of Lynchburg native Desmond T. Doss, who served in WWII as a medic while refusing to kill or carry a gun. During one battle in Okinawa, Doss saved over 75 lives while under fire, earning the respect of his comrades after their initial scorn, and later becoming the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. The film is directed by Mel Gibson and Andrew Garfield is playing the role of Doss. Doss, who died in 2006, was the subject of an acclaimed 2004 documentary, "The Conscientious Objector" On the website promoting the documentary, this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson describes Doss' commitment to his faith and his refusal to bear arms or kill: "Whoso would be a man must be a non-conformist." His is a moving and inspiring story--here's hoping Hollywood does it justice. |
